This isn’t limited to befriending someone solely for art, by the way. 

It could be weeks. It could be months. But the second you go up to an artist friend and say ‘hey you should draw-” with no prompting from the artist and no offer of compensation… Yeah that starts the suspicions. You may not have grown to be friends because of the art, but that starts the little nagging “what if” voice for a lot of us. 

It’s one thing for your art friends to be passionate about your concepts and doodle them occasionally. It’s another entirely to outright ask them for free work. 

Your friends need to eat too. Ask if they’re open for commissions. Some might not, some might offer to do it for free (see the difference?), and some might be so tremendously ecstatic they get to be paid to do work for a friend instead of a random client. 

Appreciate your friends. 

Don’t ask them for free work.

Also just to add, don’t befriend artists if your main goal is to gain popularity or get in a “popular” friend group or something. That also includes befriending people in order to talk to or get art requests through to their “popular” friends. Just don’t.

As an addition, don’t befriend someone(who is an artist) for a long while, stop talking to them, and one day just decide to show up out of nowhere asking for them to make you characters or give you free artwork. It doesn’t matter if you had been friends for a long time prior, doing this makes the artist feel like nothing more than a resource for free art than it does making them feel like they have a friend they can trust and feel close to.

Out of personal experience, don’t do this. Don’t force us to feel obligated because we were closer as friends a while ago.
